Full Show Notes:

Healthy Habits for Healthy Retirement

Most people understand the benefits of saving for retirement. They spend time understanding how IRAs and 401Ks work because nobody wants to depend on friends and family during retirement. Further, happy retirement is no longer about sitting and watching time fly. Nowadays, people view retirement as a time full of adventure and excitement. However, there is one thing that could potentially jeopardize your aspirations for retirement: health. Jill believes people should be encouraged to think about their health when creating a financial retirement plan. She further explains that there is no point in saving millions for retirement and ignoring your health at the same time. You’ll either be too sick to pursue your aspirations or spend all your money on hospital bills.

Health and Wellness Advice for 20-Year-Olds

For the most part, young adults in their 20s don’t always do all they can to live a healthy lifestyle. The common assumption is that the future is so far away, and a 20-something is young and healthy. While this might be true, Jill explains that lifestyle and health decisions made during our first decade in adulthood dramatically affect how well we enjoy retirement. For example, adopting a healthy lifestyle in your 20s is strongly linked with a lower risk for chronic illnesses such as heart disease. The thing to note here is that neglecting seemingly small lifestyle habits can have a cumulative effect on your future quality of life. Unfortunately, society today does not set young adults to be healthy. And so, as a young adult, it’s up to you to take up the initiative and adopt healthy living.

Why You Need an Accountability Partner for Healthy Living

When it comes to adopting a healthy lifestyle, most people struggle with focus and motivation. Jill explains that people who take up healthy living independently last less than eight weeks before giving up. But there is a solution. An accountability partner is someone who will help you and be a part of your healthy living or fitness routine. It has to be someone you can constantly dialogue with to motivate, encourage, and keep you focused on your health goals. Nonetheless, the relationship has to be mutualistic where both you motivate and encourage each other whenever necessary.

Myths and Facts About Calories During Weight Loss

The first thing that most people think of when trying to lose weight is the number of calories they consume. The assumption is based on the notion that you’re more likely to lose weight if you burn more calories than you consume. However, Jill explains that there are more factors at play during weight loss than the perceived calories in, calories out approach.

First, understand that three body processes burn calories: basic metabolism, digestion, and physical activity. Therefore, when the amount of calories you consume is equal to the amount you burn through digestion, metabolism, and physical activity, your weight will remain stable. So, you need a calorie deficit to lose weight.
