Tax planning: Game Winning Strategies!

Full Show Notes:

What Is Asset Location?

It’s tax season again, and if you’re like most people, you’re looking for strategies to help you pay less than necessary in taxes. One such strategy is asset location. So, what is asset location? First, you need to understand that asset location is completely different from asset allocation. Asset allocation is defined as how assets are mixed and distributed in a given investment account.

On the other hand, asset location refers to the placement of an investment in a taxable or tax-advantaged account. The primary use of a tax location strategy is to receive the best tax treatment. For example, when thinking about asset location, you might consider your contributions towards your employer’s 401(k) or any worthwhile additions to your online brokerage accounts. This means that the primary focus is on the investment options that guarantee minimal tax implications rather than investing with an eye on the best returns.

Tax Scams to Watch Out For in 2022

As mentioned earlier, the 2022 tax season is underway, and like every other year, scammers have already begun intercepting and redirecting refunds while causing general havoc amongst taxpayers. In 2021, the IRS reported a 91% increase in tax scams, identity theft, and tax refund fraud. In 2022, that number is set to rise, according to a recent article by Trend Micro that highlights the over 136,000 fake websites linked to potential tax fraud cases.

Although most taxpayers have encountered scammers impersonating IRS officials at some point in their lives, these individuals come up with new scams that sound more and more convincing every year. Your first line of defense is an understanding that the IRS initiates most contacts through regular mail delivered by the US Postal Service. However, some particular circumstances might force the IRS to call or visit your home or business. Such situations include an overdue tax bill, recovery of a delinquent tax return, or auditing a business during criminal investigations. Even then, the IRS will send several letters through the US Postal Service informing the taxpayer of the scheduled visit.
