Is The 60/40 Portfolio Dead

Full Show Notes:

Is the 60/40 portfolio really dead?

The traditional 60/40 approach to investing has been a mainstay for most Americans, but it may be time to revisit how we plan for our future. This investment balance was designed to protect investors against uncertainties in the equity markets by keeping more than one-third of a portfolio in bonds. So the big question is, is the traditional 60/40 portfolio dead? The even more important question is, should retirees continue to have faith in the 60/40 portfolio? For starters, it would be best to review why investors are urged to have a healthy stock/bond allocation in their portfolio. The most important reason is the low correlation between stocks and bonds. However, the post-pandemic investment climate has been brutal for investors as both stocks and bonds tanked.

Although bonds and stocks are down this year, investors should not be too quick to drop this tried and tested strategy. Instead of thinking of the recent slump as a death sentence, investors should see it as a hibernation. Investment strategies run in cycles, and this, too, shall pass.
