The Retail Investor’s Biggest Edge

For the most part, people in the finance world view individual investors as less disciplined, less knowledgeable, maybe even less skillful, and prone to errors than professionals. They also lack the necessary software to come out on top consistently. On the other hand, investment professionals appear to have all the advantages. They own all the latest software, are assisted by research teams, and often have access to private placements rarely available to individual buyers. Even with all these, unfortunately, they also have customers. And customers want results. So, while they might boast all the right tools the world has to offer, they lack time. Time to watch a business grow. Time to watch a business compound in value and return multiples of the original investment.

As an individual investor, you have time. You don’t have to prove to anyone how smart you are. And the fact that you don’t have customers that demand results, you don’t even need to have an opinion on anything. All you have to do is focus on making the right purchase decisions on the stocks you understand and leverage time.

Why Do You Invest?

For the most part, people in the modern world primarily make money in two ways. The first way is to earn an income by either starting a business or being employed. The second way is by investing your assets into something that may increase in value over time. This can be anything from investing in stocks, bonds, mutual funds, cryptocurrencies, precious metals, real estate, small business, or a combination of all of the above. All in all, the objective is to generate cash. But why do you invest? Other than wanting to make money, what’s your why? Once you’re able to answer this question, it becomes easier to make better investment decisions and maintain a cool head while doing it.
