What To Do in Retirement

Retirees don’t live a boring life, contrary to popular opinion. And they certainly don’t live a static life. Nowadays, you’re more likely to find retirees backpacking in Europe than in an isolated farmhouse somewhere. Not that there’s anything wrong with living in a farmhouse because some people just crave the quiet of the countryside. Nevertheless, retirement is a time to make the rules and adapt to them as you see fit. If you’ve been dreaming of taking a trip to the Caribbean, why wait? You now have more options for how to spend your time, and you certainly don’t have to settle on just one hobby or pursuit, especially now that Americans are living longer than ever before.

Side Hustles in Retirement

If you browse through the internet, you’ll see pages upon pages of side hustles for stay-at-home moms, college students, athletes, and all those other types of particular groups of people. But have you ever asked yourself what people in retirement do to earn that extra cash? Retirement does not mean sitting around and watching the days go by without little to no excitement. It also doesn’t mean completely giving up on earning an income. People in retirement can add that much-needed spark in their life and earn a few dollars while doing it. But there is a problem. Most side-hustles are centered around the youth and their ability to work at odd hours or perform labor-intensive acts.

Fortunately, not all side hustles require youth since some people are willing to pay for the years of accumulated experience. Nonetheless, when choosing a side hustle in retirement, ensure it’s something you’re passionate about, and it doesn’t disrupt your retirement. And if you’re looking for some inspiration, try several things that interest you and do them consistently. You could go to websites like Upwork, Fiverr, or Older & Bolder and see what other retirees are doing. Some of the things you’re likely to see other people doing are: dog walking, teaching ESL online, consulting and coaching, local tour guides, and Uber/Lyft Driver.
