Understanding I Bonds and How They Work

We are all feeling the effects of inflation. The rising costs of living and the Fed’s plan to raise taxes mean most investors are a little wary about investing in the current market landscape. However, one investment vehicle seems to be immune to inflation. Enter I bonds, a safe investment issued by the U.S. Treasury to cushion your money against rising inflation. What makes I bonds so attractive is that interest rates are adjusted regularly to keep pace with inflation. Furthermore, I bonds are an even lower investment risk since the law exempts them from state and local income taxes.

Investors interested in these bonds can buy up to $10,000 worth of I bonds. You can also add another $5,000 with your tax refund. The even better news is that I bonds mature and can continually earn interest after 30 years. However, cashing in early, say one year after your initial purchase, means you forfeit the last three months of interest earned.

Structured Notes in 2022

A structured note is a hybrid investment option that combines the key features of multiple financial products into one. For example, a structured note could combine bonds and additional investment options into one offering. But the thing to note here is that structured notes derivatives and not direct investments. This means that they offer investors options that are otherwise unavailable. What makes them attractive is also the reason to be wary of them. First, structured notes contain a bond element that most people would consider safe. However, the inclusion of stocks and derivatives makes them a little more volatile.

With the markets down and inflation at an all-time high, are structured notes valuable investment options in 2022? Most financial experts would argue they are. Structured notes can help you test new markets. But the complexity of these transactions can make them extremely risky. This is why we recommend talking to a professional before committing to anything.
