2023 Key Events and Lessons

Full Show Notes:

Lessons From 2023

2023 has been a year full of ups and downs. As we head into the new year, it would be best to go in with a clear strategy to steer clear of common pitfalls.

1. Don’t Fed Watch

Everybody knows that it’s never a good idea to fight the Fed. And although most people never fight the Fed, they do something that’s almost as disastrous: they continuously watch the Fed. Going on a year-long obsession with the Fed’s every move will always turn into a futile guessing game. Instead of reacting to every rate fluctuation, consider a longer-term view. Think outside the box. Sectors hit by heightened fears, like banks and housing-related stocks, could offer opportunities as the market stabilizes.

2. Don’t Fall for the Hype

The dominance of a few celebrity stocks in the market can overshadow broader trends. The “Magnificent Seven,” comprising tech giants, make up a significant portion of the S&P 500. However, this winner-takes-all approach tends to be short-lived. Look beyond the hype at overlooked opportunities, such as small-cap stocks in the Russell 2000 index. Less coverage often means more market inefficiency and, consequently, more growth opportunities.

3. Embrace Volatility:

Volatility is uncomfortable, but it often presents investment opportunities. Buying low is a common goal, but when volatility strikes, many hesitate. Instead of fearing market fluctuations, view volatility as a friend. Opportunities often arise when valuations are low, and the potential for profit is high. So, when people are panicking, stay calm. You are a long-term investor; volatility is the building block of your investment strategy.
